I’m Nicole Twohig, founder of Nicole Twohig Strategic Communications. After more than two decades working with nonprofits, government agencies, and mission-driven organizations, I’m energized to return to independent consulting after six years away, with a focus on leading and collaborating on behavior-change campaigns, communications, and brand strategy across behavioral health, climate change, education, and social safety net work. I’m drawn to subjects that require real fluency, not just campaign polish — and to teams that need a senior hand without needing, or being able to afford, a full-time one. That might mean leading a campaign end to end, or it might mean stepping in fractionally to mentor junior staff, fill an experience gap, or strengthen a strategy already in motion. Either way, I bring the same thing: deep-dive research, fluency in the language, understanding of the stakes to do the work, and enough collaborative instinct to make the team around me stronger rather than just doing it for them.
I bring a collaborative, culturally responsive approach to complex campaigns and communications, cross-functional teams, and messaging that shapes public opinion, business outcomes, and policy. Most recently, I served as Head of Strategy at Bellweather Agency, leading research, strategy, and digital for a communications agency serving healthcare, tourism, and arts clients. Immediately prior, I spent two years as Director, Marketing & Communications Campaigns at Vibrant Emotional Health, the SAMHSA-funded administrator of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, where I led multi-million-dollar national campaigns, managed 988’s brand and built a no- and low-cost partnership strategy from the ground up, and planned and scaled 988 Day into the program’s flagship national day of action. Before Vibrant, I led ISC’s global communications team as Acting Director, Communications & Marketing, advancing two flagship racial equity and climate resilience initiatives and authoring a new mission statement adopted organization-wide, and led communications for the Vermont Center on Behavior and Health, a federally-funded research center studying tobacco control, opioid use disorder, and harm reduction. Earlier in my career, I ran my own consulting practice, Twig Communications, the first time I built an independent practice, serving clients including Margolis Healy, the National Center for Campus Public Safety, and Grand River Solutions. This work included building message architecture and crisis communications for Title IX policy and campus carry during one of the field’s most politically charged periods, and leading a national research survey that earned coverage in USA Today and was later cited in peer-reviewed research and federal publications.
